Almost every difficult edible experience comes from the same mistake: taking more because the first dose “was not working.” Understanding why that happens makes it avoidable.
The metabolic difference
When you inhale cannabis, THC goes to your bloodstream through the lungs and reaches your brain in minutes. When you eat it, it goes through your digestive system and liver first, where a good portion is converted into 11-hydroxy-THC — a metabolite that crosses into the brain more readily and is generally considered more potent.
Two consequences:
- Onset is slow. Typically 30 to 90 minutes, sometimes longer on a full stomach.
- It lasts much longer. Four to eight hours is normal, occasionally more.
The practical rules
- Start at 2.5–5mg if you are new, or returning after a long gap.
- Wait two full hours before considering more. Not one. Two.
- Do not stack. The most common error is taking a second dose at 45 minutes, then having both arrive together.
- Food matters. Taken with a fatty meal, absorption tends to increase. On an empty stomach onset is faster but less predictable.
- Plan the day around it. Given the duration, an evening dose can affect the following morning.
If you have taken too much
It is uncomfortable, not dangerous, and it passes. Find somewhere quiet, stay hydrated, and let time do its work. Knowing that it ends helps more than most things.
